Hooray for St George and the English.

St George is the first town in Queensland via the Carnarvon Highway.  A prosperous town at the junction of 3 major roads, it's neat and tidy and showing no signs of its recent devastation by the third one-in-a-hundred years flood- in three years!  Unfortunately it's closed today.

The Kamarooka caravan park, one of 4 in town,  is very pleasant with the best amenities block we've ever seen.  Grassed drive-through sites, shady trees, etc.  Very nice.

We arrived here quite early, having had an easy drive from Mungindi.  (We passed at least 15 laden road trains on the way, giving them plenty of room).  No wildlife other than numerous raptors, including a couple of wedge-tailed eagles.  (Yesterday I saw an emu).

Drove to the Beardmore Dam but very disappointing- lovely park surrounds but no camping allowed (why not?) and no view of the water, only a fairly ordinary dam wall and overflow water.  Not much else to do in town, everything's closed.  Even the first ATM I tried wasn't working!  Luckily the next one was.

It's cooler today but still very pleasant with a light breeze.

A chap we were talking to this morning said that many small towns in Qld encourage visitors by allowing camping at the showground, usually free for one night and $5 for subsequent nights, with good amenities.  They hope you'll spend money in town.  We've already seen one of these, on the way here today, at a tiny village which boasts a pub and not much else.

We had thought of eating out at a club tonight- but guess what, they're both closed! Apparently they catch good Murray cod here- I was looking forward to tasting one.
