Catching red claws at Lake Maraboon

We had a great day yesterday, drove to Lake Maraboon, the body of water formed by the Fairbairn Dam outside of Emerald.  Perfect conditions, 28 degrees with a nice cool breeze, surrounded by water, lovely lawns and big shade trees.  Interesting birdlife and actually caught a few redclaws!

Look out red claw, here comes Chris!
Catch of the day:  this little fish got into the trap by accident.  Yes, it was returned to the water.

Chris waited till I had my back turned before taking a tumble so I missed the photo opportunity.  He was lucky not to hurt himself as he apparently came down hard.  (I told him not to walk on those slippery rocks!) As it was, he ended up with only a little graze on his elbow and mud all over his back.
After the fall: Chris and John go down to check the traps.

The men set nine traps and lost two as the cord broke when they were pulling them back in.  The other traps were mostly empty but it appears the red claws ( a type of yabbie) prefer dogmeat to sweet potato as John snared most of them, including a nice big one.  Five altogether, enough for all of us to have a taste.
Delicious.

Red claw yabbies (they turn red when cooked)
